Background

Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), we must review accessibility standards every five years to determine whether they are working as intended or need adjusting.

In 2017, the Minister Responsible for Accessibility established the Employment Standards Development Committee – a group of representatives from the employment sector, municipalities, persons with disabilities and affected ministries (non-voting) – to make recommendations on our existing Employment Standards.

About the consultation

Initial recommendations

The committee put forward eight recommendations and a proposed change in the long-term objective of the standard.

The recommendations focus on several areas, including:

  • recruitment
  • guidance materials on accessible employment practices for employers and employees
  • emergency response information for employees
  • individual accommodation plans

Final recommendations

The Employment Standards Development Committee has reviewed all comments, finalized their recommendations and submitted them to the Minister for Seniors and Accessibility for consideration.

As outlined by the act, the minister shall decide whether to recommend to the Lieutenant Governor in Council that the proposed standard be adopted by regulation in whole, in part or with modifications.
